There’s a really interesting post over at The Economist’s 1843 Website called “Crafting a Life”. The post is about how more and more workers are leaving traditional employment to start artisanal companies – companies that make small, boutique products like craft beer or hand-made pottery.
Smaller artisanal companies are able to offer consumers more product choice, and customised products. Potentially they are also able to take advantage of the falling cost of technology to automate their workflow to keep costs down.
Noah Smith has a similar article on Bloomberg entitled Craft Brewing as a Model for Helping the Middle Class.
It really does seem as though this is a trend we will see continue into the future.
